Challenge

Wellways works in a complex mental health and disability environment where clear communication is essential for building trust and influencing key stakeholders – including government.

While the organisation already had strong data and reporting practices, the team wanted to strengthen how they connected those insights to real participant experiences.

They were looking for practical ways to build a more consistent storytelling culture that would help staff communicate impact with confidence across meetings, reports, advocacy conversations and digital content, while staying true to the nuance of their work.

Solution

ImpactInstitute delivered a customised Storytelling for Leadership workshop for more than 50 Wellways team members. In the lead-up to the session, we met with the team to understand their goals and communication challenges so the workshop could be shaped specifically around their needs.

The session explored audience motivations, narrative structure and how to blend data with human stories in a balanced and credible way. Through simple frameworks and hands-on activities, participants learned how to identify meaningful story moments, connect them to the evidence and communicate with clarity in a range of settings.

Outcome

Participants left with practical storytelling tools they could use straight away in meetings, reports, presentations and digital channels.

The program helped Wellways strengthen the way it communicates impact through stories that are memorable, evidence‑informed and aligned to stakeholder expectations. It also supported a more consistent organisation-wide approach to storytelling, making it easier to highlight the human experiences behind their work and the data that supports those stories.
