Challenge

The Agency for Clinical Innovation works with clinicians, consumers and system leaders to improve the health system in NSW. It designs and implements new ways to deliver care for patients.

To support this work at the local level, the Redesign and Innovation Network brings together experts in project and change management. These professionals – known as Redesign Leaders – play a key role in driving improvement across the NSW health system.

For Redesign Leaders to be effective, they must clearly communicate the value of their expertise and initiatives. By doing so, they can better mentor and guide project managers leading critical change efforts. When their contributions are not well understood or connected across the system, valuable opportunities to improve patient care and innovate healthcare processes may be lost.

Solution

ImpactInstitute tailored its workshop program specifically for the Agency for Clinical Innovation’s needs and context.

The interactive, in-person session addressed the need for team members to clearly articulate the value of their expertise and initiatives in a way that connects with stakeholders within the healthcare system. The workshop included priming to draw on personal and professional strengths and bespoke ‘Pitch your Value Statement’ exercises, and practical take-away materials.

Key to ongoing use in everyday practice was identifying real-world contexts and situations in which the new concepts could be used. Peer feedback reinforced learning, adaptation and – crucially – confidence.

Outcome

  • Participants came away able to connect their strengths and values to their expertise and purpose.
  • They crafted a value statement and a clear framework for communicating the value of their contribution and the projects they lead.
  • Feedback indicated that participants appreciated the opportunity to practise and receive peer feedback, which helped them refine and develop their approach.
  • They uncovered their personal value statement and had a clear structure to use when communicating their value to others.
