Building community, one Expo at a time with Carly Nizner

For Carly Nizner – occupational therapist and the creator of the Support Workers Association of Australia – the My Future, My Choice Disability & WorkAbility Expo series is deeply embedded in her DNA.

Carly and has been part of the Hunter Expo story from the start. In fact, Carly helped launch the Newcastle event nearly a decade ago.

“We started our own Expo in the Hunter because there was nothing focused on disability in our region,” she says. “Now, seeing how far it’s come, and being part of that growth, is incredible. ImpactInstitute has taken it to the next level.”

“Local connection to a community is an important part of the success of the program and what differentiates us. Wherever possible, we partner with local organisations as they offer an important connection to the needs of the local community,” says Kathryn Carey, Head of Events and Marketing at ImpactInstitute.

Since then, Carly and her team now regularly attend ImpactInstitute Expos across Australia. What keeps them coming back?

“It’s the connection with the community,” Carly says. “The networking, the friendships, the chance to share ideas with other professionals – it’s all so valuable.”

One moment in particular stands out: meeting a young boy in a stand-up wheelchair at a past Expo.

“He completely embodied our motto: life without limits,” Carly recalls. Months later, they crossed paths again through a wheelchair sports program, and the connection grew.

“He’s not a client, but he’s part of our story now. He even helped run our activities corner at the next Expo.”

For Carly, the Expo is also a family tradition. Her children come along each year, learning firsthand what inclusion really means.

“It’s a beautiful opportunity for them to engage with the community and see human rights in action.”

Kathryn Carey, Events Director at ImpactInstitute, says that’s exactly the goal: “The Expos create a space where everyone can come together. When you have information, you have control—and that’s critical. Our role is to build an ecosystem where people can share, learn, and make informed choices.”

From stage performances to spontaneous conversations, Carly finds joy in every Expo.

“Each one is different. Each community teaches us something new. That’s what makes it so special.”
